How to wear a pleated skirt

The pleated skirt is a wardrobe staple that has never taken us wrong. The classic piece has grown with us. We all have a memory attached to it: maybe a school uniform, a summer staple of days spent on the tennis court, or the outfit of choice worn for a successful job interview.

After recently adding a new pleated skirt to our collection, we thought about the best ways to wear it. Join us to honor the iconic style and shop for the chicest.

How were the folds born?

We can thank the ancient Egyptians for popularizing this classic style. The time and effort put into creating such a garment gave it a higher echelon status, as it had to be stitched up after every wear. Talk about sacrifice in the name of fashion! Since then, the pleats have continued to make a statement throughout history, from Queen Elizabeth’s classic strawberry to Issey Miyake’s timeless Pleats Please collection.

What’s the best pleated skirt for my vibe?

As always, wear what makes you feel good. But you can’t go wrong with a classic maxi style paired with a prep sweater. Accordion pleats give you that sexy librarian feel, nothing too tight or too short. Plus, a low waist pleat (where the pleats start below the top of the skirt) gives that Ivy League vibe, but personalize it in style. And, of course, we never tire of the daring pleated miniskirt for a tennis atmosphere all year round.

In a vibrant red, this pleat that starts below the waistline is a statement worth making. A surprise color combination can effortlessly enhance your look in seconds. The tucked-in jacket gives leg length when paired with a higher heel. This is how we’re going to style our pleated skirt for dinner and drinks with friends or a significant other.

Maxi styling means you won’t have to worry about Marilyn Monroe moments, and pairing it with an oversized sweatshirt gives an athleisure touch to the sleek style. If you are athletic, this is the best entry point.

The pleated skirt is really a piece that you can wear from summer to fall with ease. Buy more styles than you can wear in more than one way. To further increase the potential of your skirt collection, try adding an asymmetrical hem, a leather essential, or a pop of color. We rest our case.
