Rest in peace black leather biker jacket. Fall sees a total overhaul of this iconic piece.

No longer limited to one color and shape, it has lost the classic rock chic vibe and is softer and more timeless. Indeed, this season’s skin – and animal-friendly faux leather – seen on the catwalks of Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen and Hermes, is now all over the high street. The only rule? It should be anything but black – shades include deep reds, mossy greens and warm browns.

There is a range of styles from blazers to bombers, cropped cuts to midis, super fitted to oversized “jackets”. We can all find our perfect leather jacket, no matter our size, shape or age.

Being a tall, curvy girl, I never thought the fit of the biker jacket was for me. It works on a waifish frame but doesn’t look out of place on my larger body shape. My new go-to style this season will be a slim fit brown blazer that will flatter my hourglass curves rather than hide them.

If you’re buying a leather jacket to keep you warm in the winter, you’ll need room at the shoulders and in the sleeves to accommodate a heavy sweater. In terms of style, stay classic. The sheepskin biker is a toasty winter update and the olive number from Marks & Spencer looks way more expensive than its £75.

Considering their cost, if you can’t think of at least five ways to wear a leather jacket, leave it on the rack.

My fashion mistakes over the years could fill a book. But I’ve rarely done one involving a leather jacket. They just look good. So embrace the trend and, if you can afford it, invest in it too.
