Jack Murphy brand takes a uniform approach to country style
Deborah Veale has designed new uniforms for Irish Ferries, for the outriders of Áras, for Cashel Palace (scheduled for next March), Mount Juliet, the Bristol Hotel in Warsaw and another in Paris. Additionally, it will launch its first line of casual wear online later this year. Veale has become the go-to designer of professional workwear without dull corporate basics, and her latest collaboration builds on her strengths as a tailor and those of Jack Murphy, the Irish label who, like Barbour, has a strong urban look. campaign with signature wax, tweed jackets and coats and raincoats.
Sarah Murphy, the founder’s granddaughter, is the third generation to run the Skerries-based family business with her father, Michael. As Sales Manager, she wanted to bring a new approach to their best-selling classics. “It’s a step forward and Deborah has taken what makes us really strong to another level,” she says.
Part of the challenge for Veale was to create a cohesive look for the entire collection while recognizing its strong imprint, adding contemporary styles, updating capes, parkas and duffel coats, adding uplifting details here and there – new slim pants, caped jackets, angled hems, drawstring waist, deep pockets and a mix of leather and tweed.
Among the novelties presented here, let us quote the Jen tweed parka (490 €) with a navy or green faux fur hood; the Cara waxed jacket (€ 260) in olive, navy or black; a long tailored Magee tweed coat (€ 380) named Fran after the wife of founder Jack Murphy; and the essential Erin, a long, bias-cut, weather-resistant riding coat that is also available in a tweed version called Julie (€ 440). Cashmere-blend cable knits and a range of beanies, including the wide Boston brim (€ 60), complete the look.
Veale has also taken an individual approach for its new collection of casual wear. “It’s not leggings and tracksuits and sweatshirts – I think we’re all getting out of that, but a transition to softer jersey and silk separate pieces – a more relaxed look,” she says. This one will launch online in September / October with a focus on shades of teal, cream and black.
