Justin Bieber and Diane Keaton (!) Team up for heartbreaking, heartwarming and fashionable music video

The premise of Justin Bieber’s new music video for his latest single “Ghost” is pretty straightforward. It’s touching, even: Bieber plays a grandson looking after his grieving grandmother following the death of his grandfather. But the way the video actually plays out – starting with the fact that her grandmother is played by none other than Diane Keaton – is where things get pretty wacky. It’s like a sweet, yet mind-blowing Nancy Meyers movie, only instead of sick kitchens there are some amazing outfits.

Bieber is standing on a beach in a Saint Laurent suit. In a flashback, Bieber spends time with his two grandparents, him in vintage striped rugby and Balenciaga jeans, Keaton in his own Comme des Garçons coat. Years after the funeral, Bieber, wearing her iconic pearls, cheers on Keaton with armfuls of Gucci, which she wears as they take photos and dance together at a candlelight bar before returning home, where Bieber oversees Keaton slipping on a dating app on a cheese plate and glasses of red wine. Together, they go to Ventura Beach in a vintage Corvette to throw his grandfather’s ashes into the sea. Suffice to say: she is in a Gucci coat, and he is in an Aimé Leon Dore cocoa leather jacket.

It’s certainly not what you’d expect when we say ‘trending music video’, but it makes sense that a music video featuring Keaton and Bieber, both full-fledged style mavens, wins. her own Vogue write, withstand failure included. Keaton can wear all of her favorite things – wide-brimmed hats, tinted glasses, chunky belts – which makes sense, because apparently she brought most of her own clothes to put on. (She’s also, apparently, a longtime Belieber: “I love that boy,” she said during a Ellen appearance in 2015, a few minutes before the real Bieber appeared to surprise her, as standard Ellen fashion.) Bieber, meanwhile, gets his Balenciaga moment. We shed a tear or two. What not to like?
