Thompson three rounds, defeats Central-Phenix City 38-22

BIRMINGHAM – Thompson completed a rare triple tour in a dominant fashion at the AHSAA Super 7.

The Warriors defeated Central-Phenix City end-to-end, 38-22, in the Class 7A State Championship.

Thompson (13-1) became the first program to triple in the state’s largest standings since Hoover from 2012 to 2014. Hoover’s first two titles in that race were in 6A. The latter was the first year that Alabama had 7A.

Thompson is the first team to triple in 7A.

The 2021 AHSAA Super 7 Class 7A State Championship started out too similar to the 2020 iteration for Thompson.

Thompson quarterback Conner Harrell, a starter in North Carolina, left with an injury in the first quarter, recalling his departure and did not return in the state championship comeback victory last season.

His replacement, sophomore Zach Sims, scored a touchdown on his first assist as Harrell finally came back and shone in his last game in high school.

Harrel returned in the second quarter and found Utah engaging Ryan Peppins for a 6-yard touchdown. Harrell, the 2020 7A State Player of the Year, finished 10 of 16 for 271 yards with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.

Peppins finished with seven receptions for 203 yards and two touchdowns. The Alabama commits Trequon Fegans and his freshman brother Anquon were each intercepted.

Fourteen of Central’s points were scored at the last minute when Thompson’s starters were knocked out.
